How to Use a Dab Rig
Dabbing can feel intimidating if you've never done it — torch, banger, carb cap, dab tool, concentrates — it's a lot of new gear. But the basics are simple once you understand the steps. This guide walks you through everything from filling your rig with water to cleaning up after your session.
What You'll Need
- • Dab rig — a water pipe with a 14mm or 18mm female joint (see our bong guide)
- • Quartz banger — the heating bucket that fits into your rig joint (starter kit available)
- • Carb cap — controls airflow and pressure inside the banger (included in starter kit above)
- • Dab tool — for handling sticky concentrates (5-piece set)
- • Butane torch — for heating the banger (best torch lighters UK)
- • Concentrate — wax, shatter, live resin, rosin, or budder
- • Cotton swabs — for cleaning after each dab
Step 1: Set Up Your Dab Rig
Fill the rig with room-temperature water. You want enough water to cover the downstem percolator by about 1-2cm — the water should bubble visibly when you inhale without splashing up into the mouthpiece. Too much water and you'll be drinking bong water. Too little and you lose filtration and cooling. If you're using a dab mat, place the rig on top to protect your surface and stop it sliding around.
Attach your quartz banger to the joint. Give it a gentle twist to make sure it's seated properly. A loose banger wastes heat and can fall off mid-dab.
Step 2: Heat the Banger
This is where the torch lighter comes in. Use a continuous-flame torch like the Blazer GT8000 or Scorch Torch. Hold the flame about 2-3cm from the quartz and heat the bottom and lower sides of the bucket evenly.
- •Low-temp dabs (best flavour): Heat for 25-30 seconds, then let cool for 45-60 seconds. Target temp: 315-370°C.
- •Medium-temp (balanced): Heat for 35-40 seconds, cool for 25-35 seconds. Target temp: 370-430°C.
- •High-temp (big clouds): Heat for 40-45 seconds, dab almost immediately. Target temp: 430°C+. Harsher on the throat, less flavour.
If the quartz glows red, it's too hot. Let it cool longer. Beginners should start with medium heat and adjust based on feel. For precision, an infrared thermometer removes the guesswork.
Step 3: Load and Cap
Use your dab tool to pick up a rice-grain-sized amount of concentrate — start small, you can always do another dab. Drop the concentrate onto the inner wall of the banger (not the bottom centre). The wall is hotter and will vaporise the oil more efficiently.
Immediately place the carb cap over the banger opening. The cap restricts airflow, creating pressure that lowers the vaporisation point and forces the oil to spread across the hot quartz. A directional flow cap (bubble cap) lets you angle the vapour stream to push the oil around. If you're using terp pearls, the airflow from the cap will spin them inside the bucket, spreading the oil continuously for complete extraction.
Step 4: Inhale
Draw slowly and steadily through the mouthpiece. You should see vapour forming inside the banger as the oil vaporises. The carb cap directs airflow to keep the vapour moving. Inhale for 5-10 seconds, then remove the carb cap to clear the remaining vapour from the rig. Exhale and assess — smooth and flavourful means you nailed the temperature. Harsh and burnt means it was too hot. No visible vapour means it was too cold.
A good low-temp dab should taste like the concentrate smells in the jar — you should be able to taste specific terpene notes. If it tastes like burnt popcorn, the temp was too high.
Step 5: Clean Up
While the banger is still warm (but not hot enough to burn you), wipe the inside with a dry cotton swab to absorb any residual oil. Follow with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol for a deeper clean. This takes 10 seconds and keeps your banger in pristine condition.
If you let the residual oil cool and harden, it turns into dark carbon deposits that are much harder to remove. A clean banger delivers better flavour and lasts longer. For weekly deep cleaning, soak the banger in isopropyl alcohol for 30 minutes — see our bong cleaning guide for the full method.
Temperature Reference
| Temp Range | Flavour | Clouds | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 315-370°C | ★★★★★ | ★★☆☆☆ | Flavour chasing, live resin, rosin |
| 370-430°C | ★★★★☆ | ★★★★☆ | Best all-round range for daily dabbing |
| 430°C+ | ★★☆☆☆ | ★★★★★ | Maximum vapour production, less flavour |
Pro tip: use a timer on your phone. Heat for 30 seconds, start the timer when you stop heating, and dab when it hits your target cool-down time. Consistency is everything.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- ✗Taking too big a dab: Start with a rice-grain size. A big dab produces more vapour than you can comfortably inhale and wastes concentrate.
- ✗Not letting the banger cool enough: Dabbing at full torch heat burns the oil, destroys terpenes, and gives a harsh, unpleasant hit. Patience pays off.
- ✗Skipping the carb cap: Without a carb cap, the oil pools in the bottom of the banger and burns. The cap creates pressure that vaporises the oil at a lower temperature.
- ✗Not cleaning between dabs: Residual oil burns onto the quartz and creates a dark, cloudy layer that ruins flavour and shortens banger life. Swab after every dab.
- ✗Rinsing a hot banger with water: Thermal shock can crack the quartz instantly. Always let the banger cool before cleaning with ISO or water.
