The banger is the most important part of your dab setup. Look for thick quartz (3mm+) that holds heat well, a 90° joint angle (standard for most UK rigs), and a beveled edge if you plan to use terp pearls. Avoid cheap 1.5mm bangers — they lose heat too fast and crack more easily. Most UK rigs use 14mm female joints, but check your rig before buying.
A carb cap controls the airflow inside your banger. Without one, your concentrate pools in the bottom and burns. With a directional flow cap (bubble cap or spinner cap), the angled stem pushes air around the bucket, circulating the oil across the hot walls for complete vaporisation. A good carb cap is the single biggest upgrade you can make to your dab experience.
Terp pearls spin inside your banger, spreading the oil for more even heating. For standard 22-25mm bangers, 6mm pearls are the sweet spot. For smaller buckets (20mm or less), use 4mm. Borosilicate glass is the budget-friendly starter choice at around £6 for 10. Ruby and sapphire pearls conduct heat better but cost significantly more — start with glass and upgrade if you feel the need.
Different concentrates need different tool tips. Flat spatulas work best for saucy live resins and budders. Pointed picks are ideal for shatter and crumble. Ball tips help with precise dosing. Low-temp dabbing (315-370°C) preserves terpenes and delivers the best flavour. Medium-temp (370-430°C) gives bigger clouds with good flavour. High-temp (430°C+) produces massive clouds but sacrifices flavour and can irritate your throat. Use a timer or an e-nail for consistent results.
You can use a regular bong with a quartz banger and bowl adapter, but dedicated dab rigs are designed with smaller chambers and better airflow for concentrate vapour. A smaller chamber means less vapour gets lost to diffusion, giving you bigger, more flavourful hits.
With proper care (wiping after each use, ISO soaks, no torching clean), a good quartz banger can last 3-6 months before showing signs of devitrification (clouding). Cheap bangers last 1-2 months. Heat stress and thermal shock are the main killers — let the banger cool naturally, don't run it under water.
